2021 Reflections

2021 Reflections

As we reflect on 2021, we at Catoctin Breeze feel incredibly grateful for the support of our patrons, the dedication of our team, and the kindness that Mother Nature had on the 2021 vintage.

A few highlights that I would like to touch on include:

The hiring of Jesse Powers as our winemaker. The 2021 vintage is gearing up to be our favorite one thus far, without a doubt. I know that we say every year is better than the previous, but as a relatively young winery, it is quite common to see improvements year after year. With each vintage, we gain more confidence in both the vineyard and the cellar. We understand our vines and wines just a little bit more; allowing us to make subtle tweaks to help express and elevate the wine’s true character. Jesse’s vision, endless curiosity, and meticulous execution has us all excited for the next era at CBV. While we thank Jesse for the delicious wine in barrel, we must also take a moment to thank Dan Larason, our vineyard manager, for being the man in charge of producing excellent fruit!

Monthly technical tastings with our team: You can’t make good wine if you don’t know what good wine tastes like. Every month, we curate a blind tasting for our team. We choose to taste world-class wines from various regions. Not only is this an absolute blast, but we’re all learning so much from it, and it helps us at the blending table. Stay tuned for us to share similar experiences with you! We already have a Syrah mini-series scheduled for our members. There are more to come.

New Plantings for 2022 and 2023: Just before the end of the year, we finalized our plans to plant the remainder of our vineyard (happening in 2022 and 2023). We relied heavily on our geologist, Bubba Beasley, to help us decide what to plant, and where. We were also fortunate enough to get some advice from Ed Boyce from Black Ankle to help us select specific clones for our Bordeaux varieties, given his vast experience with them in our area. That being said, we will be planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Petit Manseng, and Vidal Blanc. You may read more about this project by clicking here.

2022 marks the 10th anniversary of our first vintage! We can’t but feel grateful for your support. Part of our mission is to make the best wines that we can possibly make, all while being honest and authentic in expressing the wines for what they truly are. We will continue to try and raise the bar year after year look forward to raising a glass with you all soon.

Cheers!
